Getting There & Car Parking
Race HQ will be located in the car park on Wells Road, Ilkley. GR SE117472 (see map below). If you want to enter a postcode into your SatNav, LS29 9JE is the nearest. For late entries, and for any queries on the day, look for the big red & white Abbey Runners tent beside the car park. Please park in this car park; once it is full, use Wells Road and adjoining streets (but show consideration for local residents: we don’t want to antagonise them!)
These will be basic! There are no changing or showering facilities available, toilets will be at White Wells about 200m from the start.
If you have preregistered please collect your number from the registration tent, if not then register on the day as normal. Your number will be marked with a blue cross for the Fell Race and a red cross for the Trail race, please check you have the right one for the option you chose. If you want to change it then please let the registration marshals know and they will give you a new number. Please wear this on the front of your running vest or T-shirt. Do not give your number to anyone else. It would be helpful if contact and if necessary, medical details, were printed on the back of your number in case of emergency.
The Route (See Map Below)
Both the Fell Race and Trail race will start and finish on Keighley Road, about half a mile from Race HQ. Both routes are ‘undulating’ (total climbing about 230m ) and multi-terrain for the Trail race. Trail shoes would be ideal, fell shoes would be fine although there is a tarmac section of just over a mile. Providing it is reasonably dry, road shoes should do but trail shoes are preferable. The Fell race is over some very boggy ground and some quite rocky paths so properly studded fell or trail shoes would be best. Please note that common to both routes there is a short section, about ¼ mile, through the forest that never seems to dry out and was pretty boggy last time it was run and probably will be so on the race. The forest section is interesting and adds nice variety but if sunny the sudden change in light levels in the forest, which is pretty dim, means it will take a bit for your eyes to adjust so take care as there are, not un-naturally, tree roots. The little wooden bridges in the forest are often slippery. Note the new clearance on the second section of forest, this path can be a bit tricky with old tree roots.
There will be first aid posts at the Start/Finish and at Whetstone Gate (the mast at the top of the hill). If you see someone injured please offer help, if they don’t need it then report the incident to the nearest marshal.
There will be refreshment on the course (water) at Whetstone Gate and water and a bottle of beer for all finishers at the finish.
There are no road closures so please allow any traffic to pass, particularly as you gather at the start. By the time the trail runners reach the road section at Bradup everyone should be reasonably spaced, however please be aware of vehicles moving to and from the mast.
If you drop out please report to the finish to let everyone know so we don’t have to call out Mountain rescue.
Prize giving & Results
There will be prizes for the first 3 men and ladies for both routes, plus prizes in the MV40, MV50, MV60, FV35, FV45 & FV55 categories (number of prizes per category will depend on the number of entries). Only 1 prize per runner. The prize giving will be at about 12.30pm, at The Station Hotel on Station Road, opposite the Station… naturally).
Results will be available from Monday 27th July on the Abbey Runners web site: www.abbeyrunners.co.uk
